King University takes second straight Conference Carolinas crown

The King University women's cross country team came from behind for the second straight year to capture the Conference Carolinas Women's Cross Country championship. The Tornado placed five runners in the top 20, including three in the top 10 to win their sixth Conference Carolinas crown.


THE BASICS

LOCATION: Roger Milliken Center; Spartanburg, S.C.

DISTANCE: 6k


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ashley Doyle led the Tornado, finishing fifth with a time of 23:21.9.
  • Tea Troche-Jones and Emily Ward weren't far behind, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively.
  • Troche-Jones crossed the tape in 23:36.2 while Ward finished in 23:43.9.
  • Mandy Lowery narrowly missed the top 10, finishing 11th with a time of 23:57.5.
  • Morgan Whitley was the final Tornado in the top 20, taking 19th with a time of 24:32.4.
  • Destiny Haller rounded out the team with a time of 26:35.3.
FOR THE FOES

  • King finished first with a score of 52, edging Converse University and UNC Pembroke who had scores of 53 and 54, respectively.
  • Jackline Kosgei was the individual champion with a time of 22:06.0, finishing nearly one minute ahead of the second-place finisher.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Tornado were in third at the 2.5k split, but the final two Tornado runners picked up a combined nine places to vault King into the top spot at the finish.
  • Doyle earned first team All-Conference honors while Troche-Jones, Ward and Lowery all garnered second team honors.
  • Whitley earned third team All-Conference Carolinas recognition.
  • This marks the second straight Conference Carolinas crown for the Tornado and third in the last four years.
  • The Tornado now have won six Conference Carolinas titles since joining the league in 2011-12.
  • Doyle and Whiley both set 6k personal records as did Troche-Jones, Ward and Lowery in their first career 6k.
  • Brandon Ellis was named Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year for the second straight year and Katy Neubert earned the Elite 23 Award for the second straight year.
UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again on November 19 at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship.
  • The regional championship will be held at the Wingate Cross Country Facility in Wingate, N.C.
  • The women's race will start at 11:15 a.m.
