Northeast State Community College Parker Black Named 2022 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar

Northeast State student Parker Black has been named a 2022 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar through the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

Black is one of 207 PTK Honor Society members named as a Leaders of Promise Scholar this year. He is a member of the College’s Alpha Iota Chi chapter of PTK. The scholarship award provides a recipient with $1,000 toward his or her college tuition. Honorees were chosen from more than 1,300 applications submitted nationally and internationally.

“A fellow student also in Phi Theta Kappa told me about the scholarship and how to apply,” said Black. “I didn’t know about the scholarship; it involved a lot of time, but it was certainly worth it.”

The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members cover educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential.

Black is pursuing the university parallel associate degree path. He earned the Basler Incentive Endowed Scholarship from the Northeast State Foundation.  He plans on serving a two-year mission for his church and pursuing his bachelor’s degree at Brigham Young University.

“My older siblings graduated from Northeast State and really enjoyed their time here,” said Black.

Already venturing into business start-ups with his brother, Black plans to pursue an entrepreneurial career path after completing his education. He has also made the Northeast State President’s List earning a 4.0 grade point average in multiple semesters. In the 2021-22 Echoes and Images student literary magazine contest, Black won the First-Place award in the Fiction category for his story The Cliff, the Gates, and the Man with the Key.

A total of $207,000 is awarded through the Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation provides $200,000 in funding for the scholarships, with $25,000 set aside for members who are veterans or active members of the United States military. The remaining amount is supported by donations to the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation and provides seven Global Leaders of Promise Scholarships, earmarked for international students.

“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s leaders of the global community.”

The funds provided by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation not only aid college completion, but also give students the opportunity to develop leadership skills to become future leaders in their communities.  Northeast State’s Alpha Iota Chi chapter routinely earns regional and national awards at PTK events for student projects and leadership.
