A collection of terrific writings and visual art submissions delighted the judges of the 33rd annual Echoes and Images, the student literary and visual art publication of Northeast State Community College.

Winners were announced this week for the publication’s 2022-23 competition. Student submissions were made during the fall semester in the categories of Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, and Visual Arts. Judges with expertise in each category selected award winners.

In the Fiction category, Rebekah Saulsbury won the first-place award for the work Sunny Pines. Parker Black took second place for Sixteen Minutes. Brian Arnold took third place with Closing Time.  An honorable mention notice went to Kyle Ewart for The Frost.

In the Non-fiction category, Angela (A.J.) Rose took the first-place award for her work Driftwood. Second place went to Parker Black for his work The Panda Express. Kelsey Masters earned third place for Tuesday Morning. Receiving Honorable Mention notices were Adam Wayne Miller (First Forty Minutes) and Shanna Holt (Growth Mindset).

For the Poetry category, Angela Rose claimed the first-place award for Coming Back to Life. Ashley Christian received the second- and third-place Poetry awards for her works Where I Yearn to Be and Hidden Sun. Honorable mention notices went to these contributing poets: Rebekah Saulsbury for Precipice of the Past; Hannah Grace Sowers for Requiem of the Moth; Brianne Clifton for The Wild.

The following students were named finalists in the Poetry category by judges: Jessica Denzler for The Ball Game and The Observation; Natalie Pinkston for The Discord Survey; Jasmine Leigh Monroe for Chronic Tuesday; Brianne Clifton for Identity; Sarah Ramsey for Changing of the Guard; Kyle Ewart for Contra Deum; Contra Ego; and Contra Hominem.

In the Visual Art category, Kailee Buckles earned the first-place award with Don’t Tread on Us, a mixed media work including brass and wood. The second-place prize went to Ashlee Wall for Jim’s Memories, a pen and ink with acrylic paint on paper. Melinda Smith received third place with Little Girl, digital photography.

Honorable Mention recognition went to Ashley Wall for Picking Pumpkins (pencil and ink, wash on paper) and Julie Robertson for Anes de la Caida (oil on canvas). Other art submissions noted for distinction by the judge were: Deborah Marshall for Springtime; Kailee Buckles for Love Builds the Human Heart; Kayla Desiree Luttrell for Light in the Dark; Elle Terry for Little Living Room; Kendall Arnold for Self-pressure; and Sebastian Bakken for Chameleon’s First Lunch.

Northeast State will host an awards ceremony recognizing the winners on April 12 at Wayne G. Basler Library on the Blountville campus. The ceremony includes a reading of authors’ works and art display of the artists.  First-, second-, and third-place recipients in all categories will be published this spring in the 33rd edition of Echoes and Images. Other winning entries will be published as space permits.
