Northeast State Community College welcomed dozens of new members into its award-winning Alpha Iota Chi chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society this weekend. The College hosted the induction ceremony on November 20 at the Regional Center for Performing Arts Theatre on the Blountville campus.
To qualify for membership in Phi Theta Kappa, a student must be enrolled full-time in an associate degree program, have completed at least 12 hours of college-level coursework, and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. A Phi Theta Kappa chapter extends membership invitations to students meeting these criteria.
Chapter advisor Dr. Jane Honeycutt gave the new society members their charge to service. She also noted the research aspects of Alpha Iota Chi membership pushed a student’s learning process beyond mere grades.
“You have to give yourself the opportunity to do something meaningful,” said Honeycutt, assistant vice president for Teaching Excellence and Academic Services at Northeast State. “We do research not for grades; we do it to find out answers to important questions, and from there do something important for the world.”

“You have already proven you have the discipline, the knowledge and desire to be successful,” said Barham. “Use those qualities as a driving force to make an impact on those around you.”
The Alpha Iota Chi chapter has earned multiple state and national awards for individual chapter officers and wide-ranging research projects. The chapter holds five-star status – the highest level of participation for a Phi Theta Kappa chapter.
The society supports the four hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship that are designed to give members opportunities for personal growth as well as service to others. Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,200 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States and four countries.
