Northeast State Community College and the Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (Nov. 14-20) by recognizing the students and regional partners joining our apprenticeship family in 2022.
National Apprentice Week highlights how the Registered Apprenticeship model creates a critical talent pipeline to address regional and national workforce challenges. RCAM and Northeast State worked with the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship to create the Group Registered Apprentice Program in 2017.
The program enabled RCAM to provide registered apprenticeships in partnership with employers around the College’s service region. These registered group apprenticeship programs use DOL standards, which provides certification for more than 1,000 occupations. RCAM welcomed these new apprentices and industrial partners into our fold this year:
Ryan Hickman / ebm-papst / January
Ryan Hickman from Washington County-based ebm-papst signed his apprentice candidate contract at the RCAM facility in Kingsport. Hickman represented the first employee from ebm-papst to join the apprenticeship program. He entered the program’s Mechantronics occupational pathway.
Bryan Allen and Kelly Holbrook / Silgan Closures / February
Bryan Allen and Kelly Holbrook of Silgan Closures in Kingsport signed their apprentice candidate contracts in February. Both students entered the Mechantronics occupational pathway. They follow in the footsteps of several Silgan associates who have successfully earned the apprentice certification.
Bryon Andersen / Bell Piney Flats / February
RCAM staff welcomed Bryon Andersen from Bell Piney Flats into the apprenticeship fold. He signed his apprenticeship agreement at the Bell Piney Flats facility. Andersen entered the CNC Machine tool path occupational pathway. The machine tool path requires an apprentice to complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training in specific training modules.
Cardinal Glass FG / February
Cardinal Glass FG, Northeast State and RCAM combined their best resources with a group of eight new apprentices from the Cardinal Glass FG Greenland facility. The company’s apprentice candidates represent the largest single signing class ever accepted into the apprenticeship program. Cardinal Glass associates becoming apprentice candidates: Wesley Stidham; Dustin Gouge; Derik Linger; Hunter Hammonds; Todd Strickland; Mark Puckett; Jacob Ramey; and Tristan Winegar.
Braxton Willis / J.A. Street & Associates / March
J.A. Street & Associates associate Braxton Willis joined the Carpentry occupational apprenticeship in March. The Carpentry apprenticeship follows a four-year path to completion. Those apprentices earn 8,000 total on-the-job training hours. They also complete more than 600 classroom training hours. Willis joins more than 15 J.A. Street apprentice candidates currently enrolled at RCAM.
Tommy Lane / Snap-On Tools / April
RCAM welcomed Tommy Lane of Snap-on Tools in Elizabethton to the apprenticeship program in April. Lane, of Jonesborough, entered the CNC Machinist occupational pathway. Lane follows on the heels of fellow Snap-on associate Brian Bailiff who signed as an apprentice candidate in May 2021.
Miles Bolden / Robbie Emelio / Tennessee High School / J.A. Street & Associates
One day before graduating from Tennessee High School this spring, Miles Bolden signed a four-year apprenticeship with J.A. Street & Associates. Bolden joins Robbie Emelio as the second Tennessee High School student in 2022 to join the apprenticeship program in the Carpentry occupational pathway.
As the apprenticeship sponsor, RCAM provides the academic structure and training processes for employers to take advantage of this workforce development model. Other registered apprenticeship occupational tracks available through RCAM include industrial manufacturing technician; CNC machinist; carpentry; and metal buildings.
As a registered apprenticeship sponsor, RCAM can construct DOL-guided training for companies of any size. This training serves as a valuable education asset for smaller companies and entrepreneurs that might not otherwise be able to offer or sustain an apprenticeship program. At completion of the apprenticeship program, participants receive a DOL certificate of completion.
The RCAM Group Apprenticeship Program includes the occupations of Mechatronics Technician; Industrial Manufacturing Technician; CNC Machinist; Carpentry; Metal Buildings. Participating companies become Authorized Training Agents to provide on-the-job training for their employees.
