King University Offense lifts King over Erskine

The King University women's volleyball team got back in the win column with a solid offensive performance on Tuesday night. The Tornado took a 3-1 win over Erskine College behind a balanced offensive attack and a solid block.

FINAL SCORE: King 3, Erskine 1 (25-15, 25-10, 24-26, 25-16)

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • Abigale Jayne started the match with a kill as the Tornado hit .467 in the opening set.
  • The Tornado block got going early too as Riley Nelson and Hailee Blankenship teamed up for a stuff.
  • Another Jayne kill gave King an early 6-2 lead.
  • Zephanie Snyder had a kill on a 4-0 run that vaulted King to an 11-6 lead.
  • King held the lead there as the Tornado only made one attack error in the opening set.
  • The second block of the set, this one coming from Blankenship and Kara Miller gave King the 25-15 victory.
Second Set

  • Another Snyder kill sparked a 5-0 Tornado run.
  • Gracia Love had a pair of kills on the spurt that gave King an 11-5 advantage.
  • King later went on an 8-2 run, including six straight to take a 19-7 lead.
  • Snyder, Nelson, Love and Jayne recorded kills on the spurt while Katie Harless served up an ace.
  • King hit .550 in the set, making only one attack error, taking the frame 25-10 on a kill from Love and ace from Claire Wilson.
Third Set

  • Following a red card on Erskine to start the set, the Flying Fleet rolled off five straight points.
  • King fought back and evened the score at eight following kills from Blankenship and Jayne and an ace from Wilson.
  • Erskine used a 5-0 run to take a 13-9 lead, and later scored six straight to open up a 21-14 advantage.
  • However, the Tornado worked their way back as Jayne posted a kill and Jersey Wines followed with an ace.
  • After a Flying Fleet point, King scored six straight points, evening the set at 22.
  • In all, it was an 8-1 Tornado run as Miller posted two kills and added a block with Jayne on the spurt.
  • King held off two set points, but Erskine came through on the third try, taking the set 26-24.
Fourth Set

  • Erskine led 4-3 before King scored six straight points to take a 9-4 lead.
  • Blankenship started the spurt with a kill before an ace from Wilson.
  • Blankenship added another kill and chipped in on two blocks with Miller to highlight the spurt.
  • King look to put the set out of reach with four straight points to take a 17-9 lead.
  • Jayne posted a pair of kills to pull King within two points of the match.
  • Blankenship and Snyder posted consecutive kills to give King the 25-16 victory to take the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Blankenship and Jayne led King with 11 kills each. Blankenship added 13 digs and four blocks for the double-double.
  • Snyder added 10 kills and hit a blistering .588.
  • Miller chipped in with seven kills and five blocks, including one solo stuff.
  • Love added seven kills and a .417 attack percentage.
  • Nelson also hit .417 with five kills and three blocks.
  • Wilson led the back row with 15 digs while Wines chipped in with 11 digs.
  • Harless handed out 24 assists and Lydia Buchanan added 17 helpers.
FOR THE FOES

  • Meredith Hollinger led Erskine with 14 kills and 18 digs.
  • Sam Bebber chipped in with eight kills.
  • Laney Gaston handed out 15 assists and registered 12 digs while Caroline Kelly accounted for 10 digs.
UP NEXT

  • King travels to Emmanuel College on Friday night. First serve from Franklin Springs, Ga. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
  • Erskine hosts Lees-McRae College on Friday night.
